Investigating Traumatic Brain Injury
Our team at the Mass General Hospital Lab for NeuroImaging of Coma and Consciousness (NICC) studies how patients recover from traumatic brain injury and how to promote the recovery process.
We use advanced neuroimaging and electrophysiological techniques to identify brain networks whose connectivity is critical to the restoration of consciousness, communication, and cognitive function.
We believe that the identification of these brain networks will allow clinicians to provide more accurate prognoses and enable the development of personalized treatments that promote recovery.
Our efforts are dedicated to improving quality of life for civilians and military personnel with traumatic brain injury.

“Whenever a team of doctors feels like there is not much hope for a patient, I show them Dylan’s scan and say, ‘What do you think this kid’s chances of recovery were?’ Then when I tell them how well he is doing, everyone is just shocked and humbled, and at the very least rethinks their assessment of the patient before them.”
